HEW Federal Credit Union Wins Dora Maxwell Award for Financial Literacy Fitness Day

HEW Federal Credit Union has won Honorable Mention in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program for credit unions.  The Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the District of Columbia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association, honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities.

The award-winning entry focused on the Credit Union’s Financial Fitness Day in April at the Penn Branch Shopping Center in Southeast Washington, D.C.  The event was intended to educate residents of some of the city’s least financially served neighborhoods about the value of credit unions as an alternative to payday lenders and check cashing outlets.

Participants were provided with information on the wise use of credit, the creation of a personal or family budget and the value of saving money.  Several hundred individuals participated in the day-long event, which also drew D.C. Councilman Kevin P. Chavous, local civic leaders and the Credit Union’s staff.

“When our Credit Union earned approval to serve District residents in October 2003, we knew no area needed our affordable, consumer-friendly financial services ore than the Anacostia area,” notes HEW Federal Credit Union President/CEO Kathy Geary.  “Credit unions have a long, proud tradition of serving those most in need, and of helping everyday people plan for their financial futures and achieve their financial dreams.”

The annual credit union award competition is named after Dora Maxwell, a credit union pioneer, who worked with several organizations to improve the living standards of the poor and needy.

The Credit Union has been involved in a full array of community events throughout the year in Wards 7 & 8, looking to build awareness of the Credit Union while educating residents of financial and credit matters.  This region is an integral part of the Credit Union’s plan for Underserved expansion and membership growth.  Watch for additional Credit Union community events in 2005!
