HEW Federal Credit Union reaches out to the Residents of Southeast Washington, D.C.9/26/2004
Alexandria, Virginia September 26, 2004 On a typical hot and humid late summer day in Washington, Saturday August 28th, HEW Federal Credit Union was an active participant in the annual Family/Back-To-School community event at Southern Homes and Garden, a housing cooperative in Southeast Washington, D.C. The Credit Union signed up dozens of new members from the community and the entire neighborhood was excited about having HEWFCU in the community, but even more importantly, the Credit Union provided financial education and informative materials to the residents - both young and old. The Credit Union also strengthened its bond with the neighborhood, its civic leaders, and elected officials.
HEWFCU was also a big hit with the many children who attended the event, as they handed out goody bags containing candy, toys, and coloring books filled with valuable financial tips and ideas. "The level of interest and support from the neighborhood was amazing and stimulating for the HEWFCU staff" said Jeff Goff, Vice President for Administration at the Credit Union, " we look forward to the day when we have branches and staff throughout this community able to serve the community and residents, and dozens just like them ? every day!".
HEWFCU is looking forward to bringing a full array of financial services and financial education programs to the various communities of Washington, D.C. and putting the credit union philosophy of "people-helping-people" into practice there. In its research of the District of Columbia market in preparation of its application, HEWFCU found many neighborhoods and their residents were sorely in need of competitive and "member-friendly" loans and other financial services. The Credit Union plans call for it to truly become a part of the communities within Washington, not only with its facilities, but also with its programs, employees, education and community involvement." The Credit Union's mission to "Exceed our members' expectations in our commitment to their financial success" is further testament to its commitment to serve the needs of its vast and expanding membership. The southeast section of Washington, D.C. known as Wards 7 & 8 are the initial target, and the site of the Credit Union?s first in school branch. The "Warrior" branch, within H.D. Woodson Senior High School, is slated to open in early October, providing saving and money management education and a financial alternative for its 788 students, faculty and parents.
HEW Federal Credit Union received its charter and commenced operation on May 26, 1936, just two years after the passage of the Federal Credit Union Act and over the past seven decades of service, has consistently grown its membership and assets to 20,000 and over $125 million, respectively. Based in Alexandria, Virginia, HEWFCU has branches in Southwest Washington, D.C. as well as branches in Falls Church, Virginia, Forestville, Maryland and two branches in Philadelphia. The Credit Union was granted the authority to serve all of Washington D.C. as an underserved area in October of 2003.
